On May 23, the Lithuanian Union of People with Disabilities (LŽNS), together with the Lithuanian Nature Foundation and the Latvian Green Movement, organized a seminar to discuss the accessibility of natural objects, with special attention paid to the adaptation of coastlines and beaches according to the principles of universal design.

Universal design – what is it?

Universal design is about solutions that ensure that natural objects are accessible to everyone: people with disabilities, children, the elderly, and others. It includes a safe environment and easy access to nature, allowing everyone to enjoy it, regardless of physical abilities.

Why are we involved in this process?

The Lithuanian Nature Foundation (LGF) is concerned not only with the protection of green spaces and ecosystems, but also with their accessibility for vulnerable groups. Together with partners, we intend to participate in the Nature Accessible Certification (NaaC) process, which includes the creation and development of nature accessibility certification, regulatory legislation and certification standards.

Nature Accessibility Certificate

The Baltic region (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia) is seen as a unified tourist region, but there is a significant lack of information about natural objects adapted for people with special needs. Implementing NaaC would solve this problem and make the region even more attractive to foreign tourists.

This year, certificates will be awarded to seven natural objects in Latvia that meet universal design requirements and basic certification criteria: LGF and partners intend to implement and develop this process in Lithuania, and it is also planned to start certification in Estonia.
