
Natura 2000 area studies and development plans
Purpose:
Based on research data, expand and strengthen the Natura 2000 network in Lithuania and Latvia. In order to ensure more effective habitat protection, improve knowledge about the distribution of the dusky golden beetle, update nature management planning and submit proposals for the establishment of new protected areas or the addition of existing protection objectives.
Main actions:
1. Research:
● using pheromone traps in and outside Natura 2000 areas to carry out
monitoring work to further deepen knowledge about the distribution of the target golden beetle species.
● Data collected during the project on protected species will be used to update national
protected species databases SRIS and OZOLS.
2. Preparation of nature management plans:
● It is planned to prepare and submit 3 environmental management plans to the responsible institutions for approval.
plans for the following Natura 2000 areas in Lithuania: Verknė River Valley, Ošvenčia River
and its valleys, Balbieriškis Forest.
● Prepare and submit for approval 6 nature management plans for these Natura 2000 areas
In Latvia: Ogre Valley, flooded Sitas and Pededze meadows, Mugurvė meadows,
Kalkupe Valley, Rakupe Valley and Ziemelgauja.
3. Development of the Natura 2000 network. Based on research data collected during the project,
to prepare proposals for the responsible authorities regarding:
● establishment of at least 2 new territories in Lithuania that meet Natura 2000 requirements
or supplementing the protection objectives of existing Natura 2000 areas.
● Supplementing the protection objectives of at least 12 existing Natura 2000 sites in Latvia by including
goldfinch.
● Establishment of at least 2 new Natura 2000 sites for the sooty golden beetle species
In Latvia.
