Creation of a cross-border ecological network
Purpose:
To create an ecological network connecting Osmoderma barnabita habitats in Latvia and Lithuania. The network will include
main habitat areas of the dusky golden beetle: 31 Natura 2000 sites in Lithuania and 22
In Latvia, as well as individual deciduous trees – potential habitats for the golden beetle – located
between these territories.
Main actions:
1. Mapping and tree inventory:
● Based on data from the previously implemented LIFE Osmoderma project, Latvia
the natural database OZOLS and the Lithuanian Protected Species Information System (SRIS),
We plan to prepare a preliminary report using various GIS layers and habitat analysis.
Map of the ecological network running through Lithuania and Latvia.
● The estimated length of the ecological network is more than 3,000 kilometers across Lithuania and
Latvia.
● Based on the preliminary ecological network map, carry out surveys of old and
searching for trees suitable for the golden beetle to live in (mostly oaks, lindens and maples) and
inventory.
● Inventory both the main detection sites and the ecological corridors connecting them
in both countries. Also, 80 tree alleys stretching along the Latvian coast were inventoried.
roads.
● Based on the newly created valuable tree map, further project activities will be carried out
activities.
2. Data collection and management:
● Collect and record data using a specially designed mobile app
about valuable trees: species, size, vitality, etc.
● Collecting data on trees suitable for project purposes in the territory of Latvia
use public surveys and citizen science
apps.
● The information collected during the project will be stored by the Lithuanian Nature Foundation (Lithuania) and
in the databases of the Nature Conservation Agency (Latvia). These data can also be used
for further monitoring and protection of mature trees.
● Based on the collected field data, continuously update the preliminary map and
to draw up a detailed ecological network plan (scale 1:5,000).
