Agriculture and food
Agriculture in Lithuania is one of the most important branches of the economy, but at the same time it is also a major challenge for the conservation of biodiversity. Intensifying agricultural activities, especially the cultivation of monocultures, annually reduces the areas of natural and semi-natural habitats, has a negative impact on wildlife, insect pollinator populations and the abundance of birds in rural landscapes. In addition, intensive crop development contributes to the pollution of rivers and the Baltic Sea with nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, which are harmful to aquatic ecosystems.
However, properly applied extensive mixed agricultural practices can help preserve valuable grassland habitats and open-space biodiversity. Such activities contribute to more sustainable farming and ensure long-term benefits for nature and people.
The Lithuanian Foundation for Nature is actively involved in addressing these challenges by promoting more sustainable agriculture, organizing competitions for farmers who protect the Baltic Sea, and participating in the formation of agricultural policies that would support the protection of biodiversity. Our goal is not only to preserve endangered habitats, but also to ensure that these solutions benefit farmers themselves. Working together with farmers, we aim to preserve valuable habitats, improve landscape quality, and protect Lithuania's water resources.
