Project objectives

The main goal of the project is to create a cross-border ecological network of mature trees or the “Old Oak Path for the Golden Beetle in Lithuania and Latvia”. This network aims to ensure the successful movement and growth of the rare Osmoderma barnabita population. About LIFE Osmo Baltic in detail .

Project results

The main activities of LIFE Osmo Baltic are the identification of valuable deciduous trees, their professional arborist care and data digitization by creating a map of protected trees, as well as the development and research of protected areas in Natura 2000. The sample of the future ecological network is the territories of Lithuania and Latvia. The project is based on complex solutions to the problem of the extinction of Osmoderma barnabita : 1. Inventory of areas important for the golden beetle. 2. Creation of a transboundary ecological network (both within and outside Natura 2000 areas); planning of nature management activities at various levels (both in local parks/alleys and Natura 2000 areas). 3. Solution of targeted species protection problems (e.g. one-time compensation for the preservation of valuable old trees, education, professional arborist care, etc.) and habitat restoration throughout the ecological network. 4. In order to improve the efficiency of the nature conservation system and ensure the long-term impact of the project activities, the LIFE Osmo Baltic area also includes the search for effective legal, administrative and scientific knowledge-based measures, strengthening cooperation between government institutions, local municipalities, scientific institutions, and non-governmental organizations. 5. The involvement of the general public is also an extremely important criterion for the success of LIFE Osmo Baltic, therefore, various educational, interactive activities, information dissemination and publicity are planned during the project.
